What Really Happens at Your First Chiropractic Visit?
You have made the appointment. Now you are sitting in the waiting room, perhaps glancing around and wondering what is about to happen.
Will my neck or back crack? What will the chiropractor actually do? Did I even wear the right clothes?
If you have never been to a chiropractor before, the unknown can feel like the biggest part of that first visit. But once the door opens and your name is called, things usually become much less mysterious.
First, Tell Me What’s Been Going On
You sit down and the conversation begins.
Perhaps your neck has been stiff for a few weeks. Maybe your lower back started bothering you after a long drive or a weekend in the garden. Or perhaps you cannot point to one particular moment. You have simply noticed that moving does not feel quite the way it used to.
Then your chiropractor asks about an injury from years ago.
You pause. What does that have to do with my neck today?
Possibly quite a bit. Previous injuries, surgeries, medications, work, exercise and general health can all provide useful context. The aim is to understand the bigger picture, not just the sore spot that brought you through the door.
Then Things Get Moving
Next comes the physical assessment.
Depending on why you are there, your chiropractor may look at your posture, check how your neck, back or other joints move, assess muscles, or perform neurological and orthopaedic tests where appropriate.
Then comes a request you may not expect. “Can you walk across the room for me?”
You walk to the other side. Then back again. It seems almost too simple to matter.
But walking can provide useful information about how different parts of your body are moving together. Sometimes the way you move tells part of the story that is not obvious while you are sitting still.
Will I need an X-ray?
Not everyone does. If your history or examination suggests more information is needed, your chiropractor may recommend an X-ray or another investigation.
Putting the Pieces Together
By now, you have talked, moved in a few different ways and even taken that walk across the room.
Now it is time to put those pieces together.
Your chiropractor will sit down with you and explain what they have found, what the problem may be and whether chiropractic care may be able to help. If it can, they will explain what they recommend and why.
This is your chance to ask questions too. What did you find? What happens next?
Before treatment goes ahead, you should understand what is being proposed and have the opportunity to decide whether you are comfortable proceeding. Only once you are happy to go ahead and have given your informed consent does treatment begin.
Will My Neck or Back Crack?
Maybe.
Some chiropractic techniques may produce a clicking or popping sound. This is related to changes within the joint and is not the sound of your bones cracking. And if there is no sound? That does not mean nothing happened. Not every technique produces a click or pop.
Does everyone get the same adjustment?
No. Chiropractic care is not one-size-fits-all. Techniques may vary depending on your age, health, medications, assessment findings and individual needs.
Treatment may be provided at your first visit, but not always. Sometimes further investigation or referral to another healthcare professional may be the appropriate next step.
And what should I wear?
Whatever you normally wear is generally fine. No special chiropractic wardrobe required.
And just like that, your first visit is coming to an end.
When you walk back through that waiting room on your way out, hopefully you leave with something you did not have when you walked in: a little more understanding of what may be going on and what comes next.
